What’s New in the 2026 Nigerian Curriculum? A Practical Guide for Schools, Teachers and Parents

The New Revised Basic Education Curriculum developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) is designed to make learning more relevant to the skills, knowledge and realities that Nigerian children need today. Rather than focusing only on academic content, the revised curriculum places greater emphasis on foundational learning, digital competence, citizenship, practical skills, creativity and the ability to apply knowledge.

For schools, however, curriculum reform raises an important practical question:

How do you implement the new requirements without throwing away your existing scheme of work or compromising examination preparation?

The answer is not to start everything from scratch.

Schools need a structured transition that maps the revised curriculum against existing schemes, identifies gaps, adjusts learning outcomes and gradually changes classroom practice.

Understanding the 2026 Curriculum Changes

The revised curriculum covers the basic education levels from Primary 1 through JSS 3. NERDC has published revised curriculum materials for each class level, together with a revised implementation strategy and teachers’ guides.

One of the most noticeable changes is the move towards a broader definition of what children should learn.

Academic subjects remain important. English Studies and Mathematics continue to provide the foundation for literacy and numeracy. But the curriculum also gives more room to areas such as:

  • Digital literacy and technology
  • Nigerian history
  • Social and citizenship education
  • Pre-vocational learning
  • Practical and entrepreneurial skills
  • Creativity and cultural awareness
  • Physical and health education
  • Nigerian languages

This means that schools should begin thinking beyond the question, “What topics do we need to cover?”

The better question is:

“What should a learner be able to understand and do by the end of the term?”
